My Personal Journey

As a first-generation Hmong American woman, I arrived in the United States as a refugee at a very young age, along with my parents and disabled brother from Thailand, following the Secret War and Vietnam War.

Having experienced the challenges and struggles of the refugee journey firsthand, I hold a deep appreciation for the historical significance it carries, including the stories of lives lost and the process of assimilation into American society.

My parents' determination to overcome obstacles and establish themselves in America, from working as janitors to farmers, has been a constant source of inspiration to me.

Consequently, I am committed to giving back to my community by providing free career development workshops and resume review sessions throughout the year, both online and in-person at public libraries and community centers in helping job seekers and career changers land more interviews and job offers in creating a better world.

Resume Writing and Reviewing Experience

In 2014, while undergoing training to become a Career Counselor in graduate school, I acquired skills and knowledge in both writing and reviewing resumes during my graduate training internships.

I worked 1.5 year in different departments in helping university students learn to write a resume, provide feedback, and offered tips and strategies on writing an effective resume.

This further extended to me provide workshop trainings on a range of job related workshops on resume, cover letter, reference letter, job search plan, interviewing, LinkedIn Profile and social media, and negotiating an offer.

In the last 9 years, I have served between 400 - 700 university students annually, between the ages of 17 - 55 on these related topics from one on one career advising sessions, group sessions, and workshops and have helped many university students (undergraduate, masters, PhDs) land more interviews and obtain job offers.

Previously, I have extensively collaborated with recruiters and hiring managers in the recruitment of university and working professionals. In these interactions, I have engaged in discussions concerning the most effective resumes that have captured the attention of employers. This has allowed me to gained a better insight into various recruitment methods, including the utilization of ATS tools, website, job boards, and more.

When I am not working in my day job, I provide professional resume review services to individuals in diverse industries, ranging from entry-level to executive positions. As a Resume Review Specialist, I am committed to providing valuable insights that can enhance the quality and impact of resumes.

Process of Designing a resume template

When creating a template, there are four core areas I consider:

Accessibility for the reader (managers, recruiters, hiring committee members) - Is the resume easy, clean, and readable for the reader? This includes deciding on font, use of white space, bolding, color choice, bulletin point styles, and capitalization.

Section headings - What is the most important sections to highlight 2/3 of the page down?

Length of resume - Is the resume going to be one page or two pages?

File format - Is this going to be accessible for users everywhere? Will this be a document that can be submitted online, printed, and used for in-person?
